We are using Office365 emails through GoDaddy, and are trying to configure our WordPress site to send emails via SMTP, when I using the SMTP credentials supplied inside Office365, I am getting the following error:

SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host. Failed to connect to server

I have verified with GoDaddy that SMTP authentication settings are turned on inside the email settings. And that all SMTP settings/credentials are correct. So I am not sure why I am unable to connect.

    Hi @christhompson880

    Thanks for reaching out!

According to the error message, your site isn’t able to reach the Outlook server in general. If there was an issue with the credentials the error message would have mentioned an authentication issue.

Generally, when this happens, it’s because the server host (in this case GoDaddy) has blocked remote SMTP connections. I see that you’ve been in contact with their support team, so I’m not certain why this wasn’t referenced. Did you share the specific error message with them?

There are a number of ways to confirm if this issue is:

    • Due to a plugin conflict
    • A server issue
    • or a mailer specific issue.

First, we would recommend trying to disable your other plugins and then sending a test email.

Next, we’d recommend trying a different mailer. For testing purposes, the easiest alternative mailers (that are free) would be the Google mailer, connecting to another SMTP host via the Other SMTP mailer or the Sendinblue mailer.

Finally, you can try using your credentials in another SMTP plugin like Easy WP SMTP.

    I hope this helps ??
