• Hi guys,

I’m having an issue with a page on my site [stevennfpv.com/porfolio] (I think it is a page). I used Semrush’s Site Audit tool and it picks up the page as a 404 error but I can’t find any page on my site that directs to it, nor can I find it on the back end. I also do not see it in my site map anywhere.

Is there something simple that I am missing or is there an issue on my end that I need to fix?

    Thanks in advance!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @stevennmooree

    1. As I checked it’s showing, this page has been deleted from your site and now hits a 404 error when you try to open it.

    2. In case, it is available in your “Dashboard – Pages – All pages” section and not open when you check the preview.

Then may it cause broken permalinks

to fix permalinks , just “Go to settings option from your dashboard” and open permalinks option> Choose post permalinks . save it.

Hope it would help you to identify and fix your issue

404 error means the URL or “page” does not exist on the site.

So you’re looking for a page that your tool specifically says doesn’t exist?

What you should be looking for instead is the page on your site where this non-existing URL has been linked (ie the referring URL). And the tool that found this non-existing URL is the one that should tell you where on your site it found it.

@gappiah in Semrush it shows that the referring page is https://stevennfpv.com/index.php/portfolio/ but it shows this as a 301 redirect to https://stevennfpv.com/portfolio/

@baljeetuppal I already have my permalinks set as post name.

The only other information that I think may help is that, originally this page title was “Portfolio” but I then changed it to “Projects”. So im guessing the index.php link is the original and when I changed it to Projects, it cannot redirect to the correct page?

If so, how would I change the original https://stevennfpv.com/index.php/portfolio/ to redirect to https://stevennfpv.com/projects

@gappiah in Semrush it shows that the referring page is https://stevennfpv.com/index.php/portfolio/ but it shows this as a 301 redirect to https://stevennfpv.com/portfolio/

OK, so where is Semrush picking this /index.php/portfolio/ from?

… originally this page title was “Portfolio”

When you started the site, your permalink setting in SETTINGS => PERMALINKS had /index.php/ in it. This is a default thing on some servers.

So your “Portfolio” page had the URL /index.php/portfolio/

Perhaps along the way you updated your permalink structure and that got rid of the /index.php/. So your portfolio page became just /portfolio/

Finally, you renamed your portfolio page to “Projects”, and now the permalink is /projects/.

WordPress sometimes automatically redirect old permalinks to new ones… but this is not very reliable. Sometimes it works. Other times it doesn’t. I don’t know the when and how.

So that’s all fine and good.

What’s left unanswered is where and how Semrush is finding this ancient /index.php/portfolio/ URL.

@gappiah yes you’re understanding everything correctly, is there a way to change this? Or do I just have to deal with having this error?

I have tried running the site audit using my sitemap.xml and that page is not within my xml file so I dont know how it is finding this page
