• Hi there, I am trying to move the content from my old WordPress site to a new one. I need to transfer only posts and media files. It’s a website for videos and the posts each include one video and its description.

So I tried it like this: I created two export files from the old site, one for media files and one for posts (because I can’t select both at once).

Then I start importing the media files on to the new site. It starts working, but after a few minutes I am getting an error message at the URL …admin.php?import=wordpress&step=2

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [mysite] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

But I do not see an according message in the server error log. At this point, about 50 images were imported but not yet any of the video files. Maybe it fails when it encounters a >1GB video file?

I have set server PHP settings for the receiving site to upload_max_filesize / post_max_size 2000M and max_execution_time 1800. Half an hour should be enough because both sites are on the same server thus the data traffic is local.

Why is it failing and what can I do? Any help appreciated.

  • Hi @w-sky are you able to share the export files so that I can check on my site. You can add them to any cloud and share the link here.

Yes, no problem. Please have a look: https://file.io/w7Lu240tLaf9

Hi @w-sky I am not sure if I am too late but the link is returning an error.

I would suggest using an option that can last for long.

Sorry, I rarely use file sharing services and never know which one to use.

    Anyway, another try: https://controlc.com/15b888fd

Thanks, I tried importing this content to my site and it all shows the same error Invalid post type attachment

Did you add all your media file the traditional way, if you added some using plugins you might need to use a different resource to move your content.

Strange, I do not get “invalid post type attachment” errors when importing. The files in your screenshot are either .png or .jpg, we also have a lot of .mp4 and a few .srt files. All files were uploaded to the source site using the standard WordPress uploader, we did not use any special media, video or uploading plugin.

However. I found out that if I don’t delete imported media files after importing stopped with “internal server error” message, and just do the import again, it will resume and after a few minutes, break again with “internal server error”. But then even more files have been completed. After a third run I got a success message (with a lot of files skipped because they already existed). I checked the files thoroughly for missing or incomplete files, but it all seems alright.

To summarize: I still don’t know why the import stopped with “internal server error” but it succeeded after trying again and resuming.

Sorry for the delay in response @w-sky after checking with a few developers they mentioned that the internal server errors could have been a result to any number of things from a PHP fatal to a server timeout.

Lots of media can take a long time to import and the server may have just timed out, so it’s advised to break down imports into small bits. Another alternative would be to use migration plugins for importing large media content.
