• Requesting users to sign up for a free license is just intrusive and backward. No, I absolutely DO NOT need to ‘sign up’ for a ‘free’ license to use your plugin if it was indeed, free. Genius marketing ploy, I’ll give you guys that. Collect emails and bombard them with upsells until they buy your premium plan.

I’ll be sure to remove Wordfence from every installation I ever put it on. Good bye!

  • Actually nothing has ended. The plugin is still free and contains fully functional features. Nothing changed about that. There is “no marketing ploy”. The reason we did this is simple. We have no way to adequately track the number of sites using Wordfence beyond the download numbers we see. This isn’t a very good way to be able to future plan and make sure we have the bandwidth and servers available to keep providing the plugin and the services it provides. Requiring the email (which is only for sending you the license) allows us to spend wisely so we can invest where it is needed. About 90% of our users are using free licenses so it is vital we are able to budget smartly. We’re also not the first plugin in the repository to require this. Akismet does as well if I remember correctly.

Of course, we understand if providing an email is an issue for you. In that case, we wish you well with whatever security solution you choose to pursue.

Great that you guys are so dismissive of long term users bringing up a completely valid issue. being told your opinion is worthless and to go use something else makes it much easier to make a decision to find alternative options.
