Removing <p> from excerpt?

I am looking through the documentation to see if there is a way of removing the -tags surrounding the excerpt in The Loop. I am trying to make the excerpt follow directly on the title, but since a -tag is added on output there is always a new line before the excerpt.

Are there any parameters to the excerpt tag that I am unable to find, or do I have to hack the code producing the excerpt?
