    I have a message from google saying my home page hasn’t been listed because there is an alternative page with a canonical URL. I use the www. version of my site. If I go to settings/general both the wordpress and site addresses use the www version.
    However, if I view the source of the home page it says
    <!– This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 – https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/ –>
    <title>CPD For Therapists</title>
    <meta name=”description” content=”CPD For Therapists Who Want To Be Experts – Therapy Training School, Validated Workshops; Online Training, Specialists In Hypnotherapy” class=”yoast-seo-meta-tag” />
    <link rel=”canonical” href=”https://cpd.expert/&#8221; class=”yoast-seo-meta-tag” />
    <link rel=”next” href=”https://cpd.expert/page/2/&#8221; class=”yoast-seo-meta-tag” />`

    So I am guessing that’s where the problem comes from, though I am not sure.
    I don’t know how to correct this. I have tried switching yoast off, clearing the cache and switching it back on in the hopes it might pick up the www but that didn’t help.
    I’m new to wordpress so don’t do programming etc. and I’m not very technical. What I have described above is about my limit!

    Hello @debbiewaller

    Thanks for reaching out about your canonical URL.

    First, this is where your homepage loads – https://cpd.expert/. As such, the canonical URL is the same – <link rel="canonical" href="https://cpd.expert/" />. The Yoast SEO plugin uses a self-referencing canonical URL; it picks the URL of the page automatically as the canonical URL unless you specify something else.

    It’d be helpful if you could share a screenshot of what you have set in WordPress > Settings > General as the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL). You can use any image-sharing service like https://pasteboard.co/, https://snag.gy/, https://imgur.com/, https://snipboard.io/, or even upload the screenshot to your website. Once you upload it to an image-sharing service, please share the link to the image here.

    We look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks for the helpful screenshot; I’ve noticed two things:

    1. Your WordPress and Site address URLs don’t use trailing slashes but the canonical versions have it
    2. There should be an automatic redirect from the non-WWW to the WWW version of your site, but this doesn’t happen. This makes your site have two versions, as correctly reported by Google Search Console. Please reach out to your web hosting provider as those redirects should be taken care of at the server level.

    Will do, thank you.

    I have been in contact with my host and he doesn’t work with wordpress at all. (The site was previously Joomla, but I have just swapped it over. He worked with Joomla.)
    I will need to find a developer who can help. Can you recommend someone or at least somewhere to look?
    I suppose in the long term I will change hosts but for now I just need to sort this problem.

    @debbiewaller Thanks for your reply.

    Regarding your question, we aren’t able to recommend specific developers for you, but a good place to find them would be through a developer related channel such as GitHub or StackOverflow, or through a site like Upwork.com.
