How do I prevent a customer to order (likely by mistake) more than one copy of a digital downloadable product?

There’s no point in buying several copies of a single downloadable product, resulting in downloading the same file several times, but I did not find any option in the settings to prevent that.

  • Hi there @pitaraj ??

Thanks for reaching out. Happy to help you with this!
The option Sold individually can be found under Inventory, as seen in the screenshot directly linked below:

    Thanks for your reply.

That will work with single products, but what about variable products?

Someone has to be able to buy 3 copies of a physical book, but only 1 copy of the eBook.

    Howdy @pitaraj ??

That will work with single products, but what about variable products?

Someone has to be able to buy 3 copies of a physical book, but only 1 copy of the eBook.

This is a great use case. Two scenarios are presented here:
    1. Where the product is the physical book, therefore the customer can add as many in their order and also have a downloadable file (the eBook) also made available to them upon purchase.
    2. Where the eBook is sold only as a separate product, therefore the customer has to add both the physical (without the downloadable option checked in that case) and virtual (eBook) in their order.

Linked directly here is a screenshot, for reference.

I trust that points you in the right direction, but if you have more questions, let us know. We’re happy to help.

Thanks for your reply, but I would prefer not to have to create 2 products (1 physical and 1 downloadable) for the same product.

That’s the whole idea of a “variable” product, to be offered in various formats.

So I can I allow multiple copies of the physical variant to be ordered while limiting to 1 only the purchase of the downloadable variant?

    Hi @pitaraj

So I can I allow multiple copies of the physical variant to be ordered while limiting to 1 only the purchase of the downloadable variant?

I understand that you want to limit the purchase to one (1) for the downloadable product variation only, is that correct?

This is not part of the core functionalities of WooCommerce. You will need either a third-party plugin (see list below) or a custom code to achieve this.

Maximum Products per User for WooCommerce
    Min/Max Quantities
    Order Restrictions for WooCommerce

Meanwhile, since custom coding is outside our scope of support, I am leaving this thread open for a bit to see if anyone can chime in to help you out.

For questions related to development and custom coding, your best bet is to ask on any of these channels for support. We’re lucky to have a great community of open-source developers for WooCommerce, and many of our developers hang out there, too.
