Automatic update stopped working with a specific server

  • I have several WordPress sites on 2 different servers. Both have the same apache, mySql and php versions. I updated all sites to WP 3.0 when it came out using automatic update. Updating to 3.0.1 is a different story.

    Any WordPress site located on one server was successfully updated to 3.0.1 literally in seconds. On the other server, it gives me this:

    Could not create directory.: /public_html
    Installation Failed

    I tried to delete the upgrade directory as suggested elsewhere and recreate it with 777 permissions, I disable all plugins before starting the update, still the problem persists.

    I was curious why two different servers will behave so drastically different, especially considering the fact that apache, php, and mysql versions are the same.

    Automatically updating stalls randomly at 2 spots.

    I’ve been busy with this all afternoon. For hours. Each time, I let it sit for 30 minutes, and then log out and close the tab.
    Delete the .maintenance file (only there after stalling at “Installing the latest version…”).
    Delete the upload folder.
    Give it another shot.
    Before the very first attempt I deactivated all plugins, backed up WP and DB’es.
    I’m going to attempt a manual update if this continues. But I have many more blogs to go.

    Deleted the upload folder, and .maintenance file. Nothing different from the other umpteen attempts.
    On to the next blogs. Hope the Goddesses/Deities of fortune will also be with you in a minute. (They are quite old nowadays.)
