    Hi there,

I’m setting up an online store for a US-based tobacco shop and there are a number of different tax rates depending upon the product. I’m trying to figure out how to set this up in Woo, but am having trouble understanding the easiest way to do it. There are over 800 products, and as I said, many of the products will be taxed differently depending upon what it is. All my research just pulls up different tax rates based on the user role, but that’s not what this is. It’s based on product in addition to the regular tax rates. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

    Hi @bewildinspired

    Thank you for reaching out!

You will need to set up different tax classes in the Additional tax classes field by navigating to WooCommerce > Settings > Tax > tax options page, and then you can assign the Tax class from the Edit product page for each product.

You can learn more about configuring Tax in WooCommerce here: Setting up Taxes in WooCommerce

    I hope this helps!

So sorry, I must’ve missed this reply!

Based on your explanation I’ll need to manually add the specific tax to the different products once I’ve set it up in settings? Please correct me if I’m mistaken.

What I thought was 800 products is now over 1800. And different products, based on what they are, will have different taxes. Will I be able to apply the special taxes to, say, an entire category? Or will they have to be added manually to each item?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hello,

Will I be able to apply the special taxes to, say, an entire category? Or will they have to be added manually to each item?

Please note that WooCommerce Core, does not include a functionality to set up different tax rates based on a category. However, you can create a tax class to assign a class to an individual product:

To learn more please check this out:

You can reach out to our customization experts to include that functionality (i.e. Taxes based on a category) on your site if you would like.

I hope this provides clarity. Let us know if you have any questions.
