Addon domain: Trouble & confusion about URL settings

    Yesterday I bought a new domain name for a site I’m temporarily hosting. I then created an addon domain entry in my cpanel, linking the new domain to the address of the folder where the site’s wordpress installation lives.

    DNS propagation was pretty quick, so all seemed to be well. But then a short while later I started getting all sorts of weirdness trying to display the site. Domain name working .. not working .. 404 errors .. Same with location address .. Home page not displaying correctly / other pages fine …… My brain’s too confused to remember the details of what happened when, but I do recall being unable to access the admin for a while, before getting it back again.

    From reading a few other threads on this forum and also this article, I’m rather suspecting it has something to do with me changing the URLs in admin / settings / general. But I’m rather confused (and I’m not really a geek, even though I’ve learnt some stuff .. ). I think I left the “WordPress address URL” as the address of the folder that contains the wordpress files for the site in question, and changed the “Site address URL” to the new domain name address. Or I might have changed them both from the wordpress location address to the domain address, before changing the wordpress URL back again. Sorry .. my brain’s melting .. ??

    But anyway I think it would really help if someone could clarify for me what I should have in the two URL fields in admin / settings / general, in this case. Also how should I configure the addon domain entry in cpanel? Should I have a “redirects to” address, or do I only need the “document root”?

    Hosting address: enoch.x10hosting.com
    Main domain: fullofgraceandtruth.net
    Location of the site in question: https://www.fullofgraceandtruth.net/holytrinity/ [ or enoch.x10hosting.com/holytrinity/ ]
    Addon domain: holytrinityportmelb.org.au

    Thanks for the thought. But actually that’s the article I linked in the 3rd paragraph. It didn’t really clarify my confusion in this case.

    Maybe I missed the problem. are you trying to run two domain names on one install of WordPress. That will not work.

    WordPress seems to be setup correctly to:
    https://www.holytrinityportmelb.org.au/

    https://www.fullofgraceandtruth.net/holytrinity/
    should be left in seperate directory and have a 301 redirect to holytrinityportmelb.org.au

    Create an .htaccess file in the root directory for the first domain and it should contain:

    redirect 301 /holytrinity/ https://www.holytrinityportmelb.org.au/

    What I have setup may or may not be “best practice” .. it’s kind of fallen together over a period of time. I started my website (or rather my geek son built it for me) a few years ago, and I only envisaged using it for one purpose (a podcast). So it was all setup on that assumption. The domain fullofgraceandtruth.net was for that purpose.

    But I’ve since added a WP blog (my own) installed in /public_html/foldername. (Didn’t bother with a unique domain name for that one.) And now I’m hosting a site (built with WP) installed in /public_html/anotherfoldername – with domain holytrinityportmelb.org.au .

    Now .. can you please expand a little on the second half of your post? (I’m not quite geek enough … ) How do I do this .htaccess & 301 thingy … ? A few more baby steps would help my already melted brain ??

    .htaccess is a file as explained in my response. To be upfront, If that is beyond your expertise, you might want to have someone else perform the work to fix your issue. If you mess that up, your website will be down completey until it is done right. You could try contacting your hosting company with my response and they may be able to fix it for you.

    Thanks, webjunk. That’s probably wise advice. I’ve just opened a support ticket with my hosting support, linking to this thread. I’ll see what they say.

    Just to report back – my hosting support people did it for me ?? All good now.

    en0ch, I am having exactly the same problem! Do you have any details at all about what the hosting support people changed to make it work smoothly? Can you tell me what addresses are in your WordPress and site URLs on your General Settings page, and what, if anything, was changed in your .htaccess file? Any clues at all would help me!
