• I set up Better Notifications to send when a new comment is in moderation along with WP Mail SMTP through SendGrid. All the test emails are working just fine, and I receive them. However, when I post an actual comment on the blog to test it out, notifications are never sent.

I never see any record of this in SendGrid going out, it’s like the notification isn’t being triggered. What’s odd is that I also use Gravity forms and I get those notifications without issue.

I read through documentation and I made sure the settings are checked off on the wordpress blog/discussion to receive an email notification.

    Any ideas?

    Hi @rebeccalay,
    Thanks for your message.

Can you confirm you’re using the latest version of WordPress (6.0.2) and BNFW (1.9 – released today)?

Hi, I can confirm I am using the latest version of both.

I did try this yesterday with the old version of BN but then saw an update today, so I updated it and tested again, but I’m still having issues.

    Thank you!

    Hi @rebeccalay,
    Thanks for confirming.

Do the default comment moderation emails work if BNFW is disabled?

    Thread Starter rebeccalay

    (@rebeccalay)

No, the default notifications don’t seem to be working either. I’ve been searching for a solution, but everything says it’s email deliverability. However, I don’t think it’s that because the test emails that are sent out are received just fine. It’s weird the gravity forms notifications work. Any ideas? Even a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @rebeccalay,
    Hmm.

When I test this, I always do it via a non-logged in user and use a word that I’ve set in WP Admin > Settings > Discussion > Comment Moderation in order to ensure that the comment is *always* held for moderation.

Just to confirm: this is on the default ‘post’ post type and you’re using the ‘New Comment Waiting Moderation’ notification – is that correct?

    (@rebeccalay)

When I tested, I did an incognito window, not logged in, and used an email not associated with any user on the account. All of the comments are held for moderation, and I used a default post – as well as the New Comment Waiting Moderation. I even added the new comment one and tested that thinking maybe I had the wrong notification, it didn’t work either.

    Hi @rebeccalay,
Do other notifications work in BNFW, such as the Post Updated notification?

    Thread Starter rebeccalay

    (@rebeccalay)

Hi again, just got a chance to go and test this. No other notifications do not appear to be working either. I tested it with the new user registration, post updated, new comment and new comment in moderation.

    Hi @rebeccalay,
    Ok, thanks.

Do you have any other BNFW add-ons installed and activated?

    Thread Starter rebeccalay

    (@rebeccalay)

@voltronik Nope, that’s the BNFW plugin installed.

    Hi @rebeccalay,
    Thanks for clarifying.

I am investigating a similar issue I’m having but it seems to be a very rare occurrence.
I’m still trying to work out the specifics of the issue but will update you if I find anything.

It might be worth trying to narrow down any potential plugin or theme conflict.

Can you make your way through this document and let me know how you get on?

    Thread Starter rebeccalay

    (@rebeccalay)

I feel it’s a theme or plugin conflict on my end for sure, problem is simply disabling Woocommerce or the Subscribe to Comments plugin literally breaks the site, critical error. I feel it’s one of those causing all the problems with notifications too.

Not sure I can do all the testing without destroying the site. It’s got a custom theme that hasn’t been updated in years, so we might just live without perfect notifications for the time being. ??
