Error processing checkout. Please try again even though payment went through

My customers are having an error on the checkout when after adding all the payment information they are shown a message “Error processing checkout. Please try again.” Even though the message is shown the order and the payment has been processed. This is leading to double or triple orders and it is making a mess on the shop. I have tried many things with no results.

Can anyone please help? What should i do next?
