My domain name is from godaddy, my hosting/webspace is on 1&1. I have installed wordpress. I bought a studiopress theme. I am trying to install the theme and the plugins yet when I hit install it stops at “unpacking the package…” I was able to upload the theme via ftp, fine. When I went to do plugins, everything got messed up had to delete and start over. How do I make my wordpress dashboard normal so I can just upload plugins and themes? Please help!! I do not want to go back into ftp and screw anything up again it has cost me a lot of time. Thanks!

Try adding this to the top of your .htaccess file:

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

where can I find the .htaccess file?

Probably either in your blog directory or your root directory. Use an FTP client to find it and make sure that it’s set to show invisible files.

If you can’t find it, use a plain text editor to create a file called htaccess with the content mentioned above. Use your FTP client to upload it to your blog directory and change the name to .htaccess (add the dot).

    You’re welcome!

I am having basically the EXACT same problem. However, when I go to edit the .htaccess file and upload it back to the root directory, it won’t allow me to do so.

Any suggestions or help here please?

Thank you!!!!! That worked for me, too!!!

Finally – I am having this problem and I host with 1&1 also. However, I’m not terribly technically savvy and I don’t understand how to do this fix? How do I get to the root directory?

I’m on GoDaddy hosting also and having the same “stuck at ‘Unpacking…'” problem, but it is hosted on a Windows server with IIS and not Apache, does the .htaccess file have any affect? Is there another solution for IIS server?

Edit: nevermind, I just added to the wordpress folder and it worked.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Worked like a charm once you figure out which one the .htaccess files to change. I noticed there were 2 in my “log” folder. I am also using 1 and 1 for the hosting.

    Thanks for the help!
