Grey out Out-of-stock products

Hello,
I would like to grey out linked variations that are sold out (out-of-stock).
I know that there is a built in feature to hide them completely, but i want them to be visible to customers, just grey out the image, to let them know, that it is sold out currently.
Can anyone provide the information if this is possible and how? Thanks!
