Use theme header and footer

That is a very good question!

Originally when this plugin was created, adding support for the template editor to any theme was to allow users to see and play around with the template editor more of a matter of curiosity because at the time, no FSE themes were available.

Now that “Twenty Twenty-Two” and other FSE themes are available, this plugin’s purpose in life became apparent to enable users to be able to manage the templates in those themes as currently, this facility is “tricky” at best (although I’m certain that work to make this easier is ongoing in WordPress core).

So the answer to your question (especially without knowing what theme you are using) is that if you are using a non-FSE theme with this plugin expecting it to FSE-enable your theme automatically, then I’m afraid that’s almost certainly not going to work and it’s not surprising that things don’t work as you’d expect.

Having said that … ?? … we are currently working on an update that will allow you to manage the template parts (not just the templates) and so it may be that once you are able to add template parts (like “footer.html” or “header.html”) that this does what you require!

I’ll let you know when we’ve pushed the update.

I am using Blocksy. Because with FSE features for example the navigation bar are less customizable. For example the mobile view of the navigation is very ugly and not customizable.

That said, I want to use Blocksy but the power of FSE to create a custom post template with Gutenberg. But when I am using this plugin, it overrides the existing header and footer of the theme. So I like to see if we can change the page content field only and use the header and footer from a ‘classic’ theme. I hope you come with a workaround or any other idea. I hope you understand my issue as well. ??

You can now manage the header and footer template parts with the latest version of this plugin but whether that will allow you do do what you want would greatly depend on what’s in your FSE template! Perhaps you could export the template and post the JSON as CODE here?

I could then install the Blocksy theme on a test site and import your template to take a look … it’d be interesting to see if it’s possible ??

Blocksy theme is not an FSE supported theme. That was exactly my question. So I want to use classic theme footer and header because of the lack of design options from FSE Gutenberg navigation menu for mobile for example.

I am not well known with these JSON templates? I also can’t find this (?)

I am aware that Blocksy is not an FSE supported theme.

If you want to use the classic theme footer and header then you should not try to use FSE, especially on a theme that doesn’t support it.

This plugin does not allow you to edit the classic theme templates of a non-FSE theme.

It allows you to manage the templates in a FSE enabled theme and to see the template editor in non-FSE themes (for those who might be curious).

We’ve not used this plugin with non-FSE themes other than that.

Sounds to me like you shouldn’t be trying to use FSE on Blocksy theme but instead edit the theme templates in the usual way (by creating a child theme).
