Hi. I’ve noticed rating isn’t updating / doesn’t match google.

I’m seeing 4.9 rating on site and plugin settings where google shows 5.0

    Review count is populating correctly.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

@dspe This occasionally happens when the data provided by the Places API and the current overall rating do not match. It could happen if a review was removed or the overall rating simply wasn’t changed at the appropriate time.

I have considered something to adjust the overall review, but there’s no way to differentiate between genuine edits and preventing users from bumping up their overall review…

This will resolve itself when you receive additional reviews.

The same thing happens to me too. Yesterday we increased to 4.9 for a new review, but the plugin does not update

@donadaigua Please check the Retrieved Data tab to view what is being sent directly by Google through its Places API. It may show a mismatch between the overall review/rating count and the overall rating for the business.

If you can offer a suggestion to fix this, I would be happy to implement this… but I cannot think of a way to do this without affecting the overall integrity of the plugin (i.e. avoid website owners from simply improving their rating by 0.1 when it isn’t legitimate).

sorry to bring this back up.

We’re showing Lower rating then google again. New reviews are syncing. Review count is syncing correctly. Rating is not changing. Been over a week now.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks

@dspe It’s good to report back.

It does seem that your reviews are not matching those appearing with the Google reviews in the search results. The Places API does not always match the data there and it could be calculating the average rating differently. I am pretty sure the plugin is not at fault, rather it relies on the incorrect data provided by the Places API (see Retrieved Data tab).

One thing you may want to try is reporting this to the support with Google Maps or Google My Business. They could offer some insight into this because they have the source data.

Also, if you have a suggestion that I can implement to work around the 0.1 difference, I am open to ideas. I want to ensure the integrity of the reviews/rating but also offer an exemption in some instances to account for this issue.

@dspe I just checked your recent reviews and there’s a recent 1-star review that could have triggered this slight shift. I don’t have all the data to hand, so your best bet is to talk with Google Maps help (or possibly Google My Business) for an explanation.

By the way, I’d prefer to raise issue with data provider for the plugin so they adjust rather than google my business since I have higher rating there

@dspe I found this in the Issue Tracker:

API is returning an average review rating that is different than the average rating shown when viewing the business on google maps

This seems like a good match, other bugs aren’t as precise.

is google maps api not available for use in plugin?

that thread is kind of hilarious considering both products are theirs but output is different. and it doesn’t seem like they care

@dspe Google Maps seems to be responsible for the Places API (because it offers information for a given place/location).

If you make any headway with support, please report back here.
