• Hi there,

we’re a little confused over how the second address field at checkout is handled by the plugin.

Apparently it sends the information entered to the “Nr.”(“No.”)-field at the DHL-API, which can result in very long address-lines, which at some point become unreadable.
If someone enters, say,

Manfred Mustermann
Kaiserblickstra?e 1-5
Enterprise ThisandThat, Office 304
50468 DieStadt

that’ll result in the label saying

Manfred Mustermann
Kaiserblickstra?e 1-5 Enterprise ThisandThat, Office 304
50468 DieStadt

which will in turn make the address line on the label very very small.
Since we have quite a lot of customers in offices, this happens to us on a regular basis.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to send this information to the “Name 2”-field?
I know you’re treating this field as some kind of No.-fallback, but in this case that seems counterproductive.

Also, less important but also a thing:
The label we get when we click on “Download Label” in the order overview is in a layout suitable for A4-printers (with whitespace on the left), not layout printers (no whitespace).
Could you add an option to generate labels without the whitespace?

Please let me know if I’ve been unclear in describing the problem(s) or if we’ve set up something in a wrong way.

Thanks and best wishes,
Bastian

• Hi @baboehm!

Thank you a lot for your request!

Let me ensure I understand you correctly. With your example, when you enter “Enterprise ThisandThat, Office 304” into Address Line 2 field, this value is added to your Address Line 1 input, which results in a long, unreadable string.
You would like to have Address Line 2 printed under the Address Line 1 input on the label, so it is more readable. Am I understanding this right?

Regarding your second request, could you please send me a screenshot with how the labels look like for you now and also what how your desired label look like.

Thank you a lot,
Ilya

Hi Ilya,

thanks for your reply!

at the moment, the value from Address Line 2 field is entered into the “No.” input of the DHL interface, which on the label is added to the same line as the “Address line 1”, resulting in a too long line overall.
I would like to have the input of the Address Line 2 field on a separate line on the label.

Here’s a link to the label as we get it from woocommerce (in this case “Appartement 301) was entered into Address Line 2) : https://bastian-boehm.de/temp/dhl-label-wide.pdf

Here’s how we want it (that’s how we get it if we go through the DHL-interface manually): https://bastian-boehm.de/temp/dhl-label-desired.pdf

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Bastian

@baboehm thanks!

Now it is pretty clear. I will discuss this with our development team and see if we can modify this!

I will let you know as soon as I have some updates.
Have a great Friday

@baboehm hi!
I am back with some updates.

Regarding placing Address Line 2 below Address Line 1, we have tried a few solutions, but here are some issues we encountered:
– When sending Address Line 2 as a Address Line 2 to DHL API it places this field above Address Line 1, which is weird;
– “addressAddition” is placed under Address Line 1, but it is only used for international orders;
– And also, for Germany addresses, there should only be one street address line on the Checkout input fields, unless your theme is modifying checkout fields.

Regarding Label size, please see ‘Label format’ setting in the Plugin settings. There you can choose the format you need.

Best,
Ilya

Hi Ilya,

thanks for following this up!

Regarding the address line:
I don’t know how DHL and their mailmen read the labels, but having the office or appartement number above the street address doesn’t strike me as weird, that actually makes sense to me.
More sense than making the adress line unreadably small anyways.
I just checked with a vanilla woocommerce install and the address line 2 is available at checkout too – why would you think there should only be one?
How should we proceed with this?

I found the “Label format” setting, thanks!
We didn’t see this before, because it is weirdly translated in German
– it says “Format beschriften”, which translates to “label the format”.
(seems to be auto translated, as it uses the wrong contextual meaning of “label” and of “format” here ?? )
“Etikettenformat” would be a better translation.

Best wishes,

Hi,
since it’s been quiet here a few days, a quick follow-up as to why it makes sense to have the address line 2-field above line 1 on the label, in my opinion of course:

The label usually goes form most specific (name/person) to least specific (country).
The address line 2 is meant for additional information for line 1, e.g. more specific than the street adress, but still less specific than the actual person.
So it makes sense to have the following layout on the label:

[most specific]
Name/Person
Office/Appartement
Street Address
City
Country
[least specific]

It also makes sense to have the actual “address 2” – input-field below the “line 1”-input on Woocommerce-checkout, since most end-users won’t need to specify which part of the house the package will have to go to find them.

Hope that made sense to you ??
Let me know if there’s anything I can do to clear this up.

Thanks and best wishes,

Bastian

@baboehm thank you!

It definitively makes sense.
We are now testing different options and trying to find the best way to place Address 2 above Address 1!

I will let you know when we have a solution for this!
