Looking for advice on how best to structure my store
-
I’m looking for advice from experts on how best to structure my store. I’m not actually going to sell online, I just need the sophisticated categorization that WooCommerce has.
I’ve got a product (custom rugs) that I need to categorize multiple ways so that web visitors can search for and find rug designs based on different criteria: Collection, Style, Color, Fiber, Weave, etc.
At first this seemed pretty straight-forward. Create product items based on rug design and setup taxonomies for Collection, Style, Color, Fiber, Weave, etc. Not all designs will belong to every Collection, nor will all designs belong to a given style. That’s good, I want to associate rug designs to Collections to which they belong and not to those it doesn’t. Same with style.
But here’s where I run into difficulty. Because these are all made-to-order rugs they are available in practically any color scheme. However, I don’t have photos of every design in every color. Now I realize that I’ll need to have boilerplate language on each product page stating that every design can be made in any color scheme. But I also know that most people have a hard time visualizing the same design in different colors. So I want to include all photos of the design in the different colors we have photographed.
That’s easy enough to do, but here’s the problem. If someone searches for Red rugs or Blue rugs they expect to see only red or blue rugs in the results. So even if I have photos of a design in red, blue, green and yellow, how do I get the requested color photo to show in the result and not one of the other colors? It strikes me that I’ll need to make each color variation its own product item. But if I have multiples of the same design just in different colors, when someone searches based on Design name they’ll see many duplicates which seems wrong.
I hope I have explained this well so it makes sense what I need to accomplish. I really would like to get feedback about the best way to approach this.
Many thanks.
