PHP mail() function no longer works following WP Mail SMTP use

  • We moved our websites to a server that wasn’t configured for the PHP mail() function so required us to use SMTP to send messages from websites. We have since moved to a new server that is configured to use PHP mail.

    However, on the websites where WP Mail SMTP has previously been installed the PHP mail() function doesn’t work. Some of our sites don’t require SMTP (they don’t have contact forms or anything like that), which is why we’re trying to remove the unnecessary plugin.

    Is there any reason why the PHP mail() function shouldn’t following using WP Mail SMTP for around a year? The server is definitely configured for it as new build websites send messages fine.

    Thanks for reaching out!

    Please note that when you’re using the ‘Default’ (PHP) mailer option under WP Mail SMTP -> Settings (https://a.supportally.com/oKMG9L), this is the method your site uses to send emails when SMTP is not set up.

    Basically, we don’t modify the default PHP function within the WP Mail SMTP function.

    To check your issue, please get in touch with your hosting support, and they should be able to assist you further.
