I am new to wordpress, so I may be missing something.
When I try to load the NEXGEN photo gallary,or any plugin from wordpress, it displays “Downloading…..” thats all. I downloaded it to my hard drive and tried the ‘Upload” and it gets stuck on “Unpacking”.
    any help would be appriciated.
tries IE and Firefox with same results.
    Jay

It’s possible that your server’s configuration is lacking the necessary component to unpack the file. Try installing the plugin manually:

I installed them manually, then kept geting the 505 error. I ended up re ftping the wp 3.0 files and are back up. I just tried to install the event calendar plud, down loaded but is stuck in unpacking.

correction to the last post: Itryed to load the plug ins manually. after uploadig to wp-content\plugins I open the wp-admin and when I click on plugins (or just aboutany other tab) I get the following message:
Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for anything useful. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

Oh, 1and1. That’s unfortunately a common problem with their strangely configured servers. Add this to the very to of your .htaccess file:

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
