featured image resizing

I am unable to get the featured image to resize properly. The place holder image is 1500×350 px But if I upload another image of exactly the same size, it doesn’t show properly, is enlarged and doesn’t fit properly. Even if I download the place holder and upload it back again, the same issue. What could be going wrong here?
