    WordPress 5.9.2 / Square Plugin Version 2.9.1

Hi, hopefully someone can help with this as it’s becoming frustrating.

Some of the products on our website use different categories to what’s on the till, it needs to be this way as the physical shop runs slightly different to the online store, plus it’s better for navigation and SEO on the website to change them.

The problem is, every now and then, the category the product is in on the website is dropped and reverts to the same category as the till. Now there’s no hard and fast rule for this, it seems to be completely random as it’s not all the products, and doesn’t happen with every auto sync.

To give an example, a product will be in category A on the till, but on the website it’s in category Z, then for no apparent reason after an auto sync, category Z is dropped, and the product reverts to category A.

Category A is set up on the backend of the site, but I don’t use it on the frontend, I’ve tried putting the product on the site in just category Z, and also category A and Z, but the same product, at random times, drops Category Z.

Looking at the sync records, it says data updated for X number of products, but doesn’t say which to cross reference, and when a category is dropped, it doesn’t correspond with a product being sold either online or in the physical store.

Is anyone else having a similar problem?

I should add, I use Woocommerce on a couple of different sites, it never happens them and the only difference is this one uses Square to handle inventory with a physical shop, whereas the others don’t.

Thanks and I hope that makes sense.

    Hey @theshaman,

As I understand it the categories used on your WooCommerce store need to be different from the ones inside your Square dashboard. Is that right?

If that’s the case, it isn’t something that’s supported. There are two options for which system is the one of “record.” It sounds like Square is the source of record. In that situation, the content in WooCommerce will be updated to match what is in Square.

If we use WooCommerce as the system of record, then the content in Square will be updated to match what’s in WooCommerce. There isn’t a reliable way to keep different category assignments in one system from the other. The system is designed to keep those in sync. Does that make sense?

Let me know if you have any questions or if I’ve misunderstood the situation.

    Thanks!

Yes, that’s right, categories need to be different on the website to what they’re called on Square, plus some products are in multiple categories on the website.

And yes, Square is the system record, again it needs to be like this as stock is added and managed on Square, not the website as this was set up first, and it’s easier for the owner to update.

We’ve decided that we’re going to rename the categories on Square to the same as the website so hopefully that will sort it, I just thought I’d ask in case I was missing something but doesn’t seem like we are.

    Thanks

    Hey @theshaman,

It never hurts to ask. Given what you’ve described, it looks like you’re doing all that you can. I’d love for Square to offer multiple categories and multiple attributes for variable products. That would really help with feature parity between it and WooCommerce.

If there’s anything we can help out with, just let us know.

    Take care

Thanks and I’ll shout up if we have any issues with the renaming of categories.
