WebP Creation Before Or After WordPress Thumbnails?

    As you will know, WordPress began supporting WebP images in the Media Library from v5.8, this support extends to the ‘thumbnail variants’ configured too i.e. if you upload a WebP image, WordPress will automatically create 1024px, 300px and 150px [default] variants in the WebP format.

    So, does your plugin create the WebP format of the uploaded image prior to or after WordPress creates its thumbnail variants?

    – If before, then please confirm that WordPress automatically creates WebP thumbnail variants.
    – If after, do we end up with just one WebP file, with the automatic thumbnail variants all in the original image format e.g. .jpg?

    Also, if after, are there any plans for Image Optimizer to convert to WebP before the automatic thumbnail variant routine runs?

    Hi David,

    I’ll answer your questions by explaining how our plugin works.

    • If you upload a regular JPG/PNG/GIF, ShortPixel will create the WebP files after you run the optimization. In other words, WebP requires the image to be optimized.
    • If you upload a WebP file, ShortPixel will ignore it and will not do anything to it.

    Hi David,

    If I answered your questions literally, you would draw incorrect conclusions, so that’s why I tried to explain you how our plugin works.

    1. You upload a JPG
    2. WordPress creates the thumbnails
    3. ShortPixel optimizes the image + thumbnails
    4. During the optimization, the .webp files will be created, one for each image/thumbnail

    If you upload a .webp, ShortPixel will simply ignore it. ShortPixel does not optimize WebP files.

    In any case, here’s the answers.
