WebP Creation Before Or After WordPress Thumbnails?
-
As you will know, WordPress began supporting WebP images in the Media Library from v5.8, this support extends to the ‘thumbnail variants’ configured too i.e. if you upload a WebP image, WordPress will automatically create 1024px, 300px and 150px [default] variants in the WebP format.
So, does your plugin create the WebP format of the uploaded image prior to or after WordPress creates its thumbnail variants?
– If before, then please confirm that WordPress automatically creates WebP thumbnail variants.
– If after, do we end up with just one WebP file, with the automatic thumbnail variants all in the original image format e.g. .jpg? Also, if after, are there any plans for Image Optimizer to convert to WebP before the automatic thumbnail variant routine runs?
