Thanks for the tip. I just read through it and one point I’m wondering about it my images. Point 11 of the article says “If you have problems with missing images that you’ve uploaded, you need to change the path to the images on every post directly on your SQL database.”

It’s the usage of the word “If” that I’m wondering about. Do you know what the variables there are?

Images will not be displayed because the path to them has changed. You will get the box with a red ‘X’ instead. If you dumped your database out as SQL, you can use a text editor to search and replace the paths befor importing to the new database.

Thanks for your help. A question, can you tell me what you mean by “importing to the new database”? Do you mean that I download my old database, replace the paths in that, and then upload that into a new one that I create?

Backup your database, then use a plain text editor to search and replace the paths, then restore it.

OK thank everyone! I’m looking through my database now, and thinking it’s going to be a lot easier to change the paths in the posts themselves right from my wp admin panel. Is there any reason not to do that?

Also, because I am using permalinks that display the month and year, will those change when the images are transferred to the new domain?

If you have a lot of posts, then user a plain text editor’s find/replace tool would be a very quick solution. But, it’s definitely easier if you don’t have too many posts.

Just make sure that you re-save your permalinks at Settings/Permalinks in the admin panel after the transfer.

OK I think I see what you mean. I’m looking at my database now, trying to understand. Are you saying that within the dateabase text file, I do a “find and replace” for mydomain.com/wp-content/uploads? and replace with mynewdomain.com/wp-content/uploads?

That would be much easier for sure, since I have over one hundred posts with images. But could it really be that easy? I’m just a little nervous…I have everything backed up in two locations just in case.

Also I just realized I have a bunch of internal links that I’ll need to change the path for also. To take care of those can I do the same thing, replacing all occurrences of mydomain.com/ to mynewdomain.com/?

OK, the final solution:

From my phpmyadmin, I exported the database for the posts only. In there I did a search/replace, mydomain for mynewdomain. Then I imported the changed database, and presto, all done! It took a while to figure it out, but with everyone’s help it’s all good now. Thanks again.

followed all of this perfectly.
i can’t seem to get my archived, customized site to load on my new URL though… all of my pages and posts are gone and it’s just the untouched virgin theme.

i accidentally deleted my previous database though, due to a corruption of some kind… is there anything i can do?

Your database is where all your content/posts are. Without it you are left with like you say, a nice theme and a wordpress site with nothing in it. Check your host server to see if there is a backup of your database.
