• I’m building a flash website and WP blog that when finished will be moved to my client’s website. The service I’m now has always been great, but after not using it for about a year and coming back, I’m finding many problems with connecting, and it’s wasting too much time. Does anyone have any recommendations? This one is only about $50/year, and I’m hoping to stay in that ballpark, but if it’s reliable, easy to install on and upload to by FTP, then it could cost a little more. I only use it as a temporary testing sandbox. I don’t want hosting, just space for building and testing. Thank you for your help!

  • don’t like the idea of running on localhost for development?

I’m not really clear on what all the security issues might be if I set myself up as a server. Do you think that’s a good way to go? Now that you mentioned it, I’m considering it. Hmm, I would need SQL installed and everything… I don’t want to bog down my workstation or run into conflicts. But I have to do something. My testing website has been down all day ?? Any experience with this sort of thing on Mac?

There are plenty of existing topics on web hosting on the forums. Please search for those topics instead of starting (yet another) hosting topic.

well, do you need to use this away from your comuter?

there are many options… MAMP and XAMPP I think for mac, that’ll get you apache/mysql/php in a one click install

the easiest way is to set it up on a laptop or something, where you don’t have to worry about security, as you don’t open the server up to the internet

But, it can be opened up to the webs if need be, connected by external IP, or using something like dynDNS (its what I do)…but you’d want to read up a tiny bit about security and what not

Thank you for the lead, RVoodoo. It has to be viewable on the internet for my client to review as I go. I’ll look into it some more, but I think I might still prefer to have a reliable service (like the one I’m using used to be!), but I will do a little research and see what I find out. I appreciate your help ??

Yes, RVoodoo, I think this MAMP will be the ticket. I just looked at the link you posted and it sounds perfect. Then I can still use my same, lame service host as a review site only, but with MAMP, I can work locally, then just upload it all at once on a “good” day. Thank SO much for your guidance! I appreciate it very much!

Sorry, esmi, I didn’t find anything that answered my question before. (I guess now I would know better what to search, though.) I try not to start new threads if I can help it.

Just wanted to thank you once again, RVoodoo, I didn’t know about MAMP before. This is working out so well, and my work is going many times faster than when I was uploading to test everything. You’ve really helped me a lot ??
