Wordfence is disconnecting my Square plugin every 30 days. My client might go a week without realizing it. Is there a way to disable the plugin from changing the WP salts?

Hi @paramedic192, thanks for getting in touch.

Wordfence shouldn’t be involved in the disconnecting of any plugins or changing WordPress salts/application passwords in any way. Do you have any error messages from the WordPress dashboard, or Live Traffic entries that would point to Wordfence being involved in failed communications, or PHP errors you’re seeing that would give me an insight into what’s happening to cause these issues on your site?

    Thanks,

    Peter.

I am attaching an email text from Automattic Support or state they tracked the issue down to wordfence in my Woocommerce logs.

I am so sorry to hear about your issues with the Square connection. I also saw you reported the same issue about a month back.

Thank you for sharing the log file, I was able to see that the Square connection is getting disconnected due to invalid authorization. I suspect this might be due to the Wordfence plugin.

From the System Status Report you shared earlier, I see you have Wordfence installed. If that's changing WP salts, the Square plugin won't be able to connect to the Square servers. (For your information, 'WP salts' basically are related to security and authorization in WordPress.)

You could try keeping the Wordfence plugin deactivated for the next 30 days and see if the issue disappears. If it does, I recommend you to reach out to Wordfence support and ask them how to disable the plugin from changing the WP salts.

    A separate email

It does appear that the connection is able to refresh, and at other times, it gets cancelled. As previously mentioned, we have been able to see this behavior when security plugins are at play on a WordPress site. You could try keeping the Wordfence plugin deactivated for the next 30 days and see if the issue disappears. If it does, I recommend you to reach out to Wordfence support and ask them how to disable the plugin from changing the WP salts.

Please let us know if this removes the issue for you after observing for the next 30 days.

Please let us know so we can help you out further, thanks!

    Sincerely,

Hi @paramedic192, thanks for the extra information.

Wordfence certainly doesn’t change WP salts as part of its function set so if you have another plugin such as iThemes Security who advertise this kind of feature, then it may go some way to explaining what’s happening:

How iThemes Security Makes it Easy to Update Your WordPress Keys & Salts

iThemes Security makes updating your WordPress keys and salts easier in two ways:

You get a reminder every 30 days to update your keys and salts – iThemes Security will send you a dashboard reminder to update your keys and salts so you never forget.

If this doesn’t shed any light on things, we could take a look at your installed plugins list to see what might be causing the issue. You can do this by sending a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com. The link to do so appears at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Did you get the report?

    Hi @paramedic192,

I did receive the report, and I have followed FAQ and feature sets for many of the plugins and was unable to find anything that advertised the functionality you are seeing. Other than that, the connectivity, permissions and scan on your site appears to be normal. Have you been able to obtain any further information over this reoccuring since we last spoke?

    Thanks,

    Peter.
