    I make a backup on tvu-09.tastewp.com.

With super-quick migration I restore this backup on a Local WP install.

At first sight it looks fine, but several options in the Customizer from the theme (GeneratePress, free version) are not restored (or not even saved in the first place, not sure): Website information, Layout, Colors, Typography, Widgets etc.

Menus and Additional CSS seem to be saved correctly.

This makes the backup/restore a lot less useful as many Customizer options will have to be manually restored …

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Update: Same thing happens when I restore the backup to another TasteWP site, so the problem is not related to Local WP.

Update: I made a backup of the very same site with a plugin that begins with a “U” and ends in a “Plus” and after after restoring it on LocalWP there were *no* problems with lost Customizer settings (or anything else).

EDIT: Of course U…Plus does not migrate (=change links) automatically, so all the links point to the old WP install on TasteWP.

This is probably bad news for Backup Migration, as the problems with the lost settings seem down to the plugin. Backup Migration appears to have problems with the way a theme like GeneratePress stores its Customizer settings in the WordPress database.

Backup Migrations ease of use is phantastic and I love the Migration feature, but the one thing a backup plugin MUST get right is saving and restoring the data.

So on my sites I will probably go back to a less fancy but apparently more reliable solution for backup/restore, even if it is not as easy to use.

EDIT: And for migration? I surely hope that there will be a fix ??

Thanks @pmmueller for reporting that, for sure it can be fixed, we’ll have a look soon (now things are a bit slower on our side due to New Year, but we’re back on Monday).

    Hi @pmmueller

Thank you for reporting it, I can see your TasteWP site is unaccessible currently due redirect to https://tvu09.local (local website) – I can fix it if you wish.

In any case we’ll test it carefully with their free version of generate press.
We know that our plugin sometimes misses few settings e.g. due to encrypted data.

I don’t think Generate Press encrypts anything, so it may be some syntax error in their data, we will add exception for that if my assumption is correct.

It should be included in upcoming release ??

    Hi,

the same issue apparently also occurs with the Astra Theme.
It didn’t migrate the customiser settings for the theme.

    Thank you @lutzkind

We will take a look into Astra as well ??

    Yes, please ??

(I experimented quite a bit with backups, restore and migration and haven’t even realized that the site is inaccesible)

Alright, thank you for the information.

    No problem. I have a backup ??

Any news about “restoring Customizer options”?

    Hi @pmmueller

You mean “Select parts of backup that should be restored?”
I can share information that we’re strongly focused on BMI Premium now.

I don’t know the priories of features for now, but I can point that this one is requested ??

    Hope that helps!

    Hi @iclyde,

no, I mean the reason why I started this thread in the first place:

… but several options in the Customizer from the theme (GeneratePress, free version) are not restored (or not even saved in the first place, not sure): Website information, Layout, Colors, Typography, Widgets etc.

Menus and Additional CSS seem to be saved correctly.

Ah sorry @pmmueller, yes for now it’s not 100% clear for us but it may be caused by some caching that they store some details in files instead of database.

New update should be applied up to end of next week as we wan’t to include other improvements as well ??

@pmmueller @lutzkind could you please make and share backups of sites where you experienced the issue, recent update: we were trying to reproduce explained issues in (this) topic but no luck. We used backups created with v1.1.9 and restored these backups with the same version.

You can also prepare TasteWP sites, I’ll use them for that test.

    Thank you very much!

You had to actually open the Customizer and then publish to see the bug …

… but I have just checked and indeed – I cannot reproduce the bug anymore.

Thanx for checking it, and consider it RESOLVED.
