I’m getting the following error when trying to go to the login pg or the main site:

Error 500 – Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

I tried deleting the wp-config file via ftp, and putting it back. didn’t work. (I added security keys. Original config file didn’t have any.)

I tried renaming the theme file to try to force WP to switch to the default theme so I could login. didn’t work.

Nothing new besides ONE thing. I have a backup plugin that automatically emailed me a back up file for plugins. Besides that, nothing new has happened. I have been having a recent issue w/ the FTmag theme, but it was a minor issue (featured articles weren’t cycling correctly). Also, the server login files recorded a login when I was in bed. Could it have been a hacker? Or, was it the backup plugin?

Either way, how do I get my site back online? I have an old BU of the database, and I backed up EVERY file via ftp after discovering this issue.

  • Have you tried resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin?

It worked! Thank you thank you thank you! I clicked on that link you gave and followed the instructions. I renamed the plugins folder and created a new plugins folder, and that allowed me in! Then I had to rename the old plugins folder back to “plugins” (via ftp) and delete the new folder.

I’m worried now though. Was this a plugin that caused the problem? could it be the backup plugins I have? I had a bunch of other active plugins:

    WordPress Database Backup
    Akismet
    Login LockDown
    Move Comments
    TweetMeme Retweet Button
    Wordpress Backup (by BTE)

I read elsewhere on the support forum that if you suspect a plugin that’s causing the problem, to activate them one at a time. Or, is it the theme that caused the problem? How can I figure out the cause?

In any case, I HAVE TO activate Akismet. It better not be Akismet that caused the problem! I doubt it though, because that has worked w/o problems for a while. Probably one of the newer ones.

Akismet will be fine. It will be one of the other plugins that’s causing the problem. You need to activate them one at a time until you find the culprit.
