Running WordPress on add on Domains

  • I would like to host multiple WordPress installations and have my customers’ urls point to them using add on domains. I don’t want anyone looking at their website to realise they are are hosted by me…

    I tried creating an addon domain with a document root home (UK2 cpanel) of the WordPress installation directory but it doesn’t work, presumably because there is no index.html file there. If I then add a redirection to the ‘WordPress address’ that works BUT… when I navigate through the site each page is prefixed with MY site name and not theirs…

    I hope that makes sense… Can I fix this? Sorry if this is an obvious one, new to this!

  • First, the domain has to be purchased and the nameservers set to your hosts nameservers. I assume you’ve done that. Then you’d just go into your cpanel and create an addon domain. That will create a directory in the root where the domain will reside.

    There probably won’t be an index file in the addon domain directory. What you’ll most likely see if you go to the domain URL is an index of the site… AKA a list of whatever files are in the addon domain directory. That’s exactly what you should be seeing until you upload something. As for redirecting, you shouldn’t be redirecting anything. You just create the addon domain and then treat it like any other domain.

    PS: It can sometimes take up to 48 hours for a domain to propagate (be viewable on the internet).

    Yes, I’ve done all that, thank you. I have created an add on domain pointing to the WordPress installation directory (index.php etc are in there)

    I removed the redirection (not sure why I seemed to need it before :-S) and it works except:
    When I look at different pages on the website instead of getting:
    for example : https://www.customersite.co.uk/?page_id=6
    I get
    for example : https://www.[[WordPress address (URL)]]/?page_id=6

    This shows my domain name with the subdirectory I installed WordPress for them… I’m trying to get to look as it would with my other html sites so it doesn’t show my domain name…

    What can I do to fix this?

    Aaaah……! I hadn’t noticed the domain name drop down on installation… Sorted ??

    Ok. so what was the fix here? I have the same problem. I have my main domain and subdomains attached. All my articles appear as Maindomain.subdomain and I want it to just be the subdomain.com/article etc. Did I mess up in the install? I have bluehost with C-panel. Will I have to reinstall? Can I move the blog?

    jmccabeVA – There are a few things that could be affecting this. If you provide your URL, someone might be able to get more accurate information for you.

    It could be that the DNS isn’t setup properly to resolve to the correct location and/or is redirecting because of something like that.

    It could be that your Blog and WordPress URLs are incorrect — these can be changed in the Settings in the Dashboard

    It could also be that your server has the domain assigned incorrectly. Sometimes this can be fixed by unassigning the domain (or removing the subdomain) and re-adding it again, otherwise, if this is the problem and that doesn’t work, you’d need to contact your host to have them fix it.
