Thanks, I have this plugin already installed. However it still allows the user to visit the Messages page and read messages that have been received, I don’t want the user to be able to read or write messages if they have a Free membership. I would instead like to automatically redirect them to the Membership Levels page, as is able to be done with the standard Buddypress Messages. Can this be achieved?

Yes, you can restrict that by user role in plugin settings.
