There is a way to achieve your goal using the default WooCommerce Coupon function plus adding some custom code. The first snippet will create a new field called “User ID restrictions” in the Usage restriction tab, so you will restrict the use by User ID. The second snippet will validate the coupon. As a side note, I would recommend using a plugin like Code Snippets to add custom PHP code into your site without directly accessing the functions.php file. Here is a link on how to use the Code Snippets plugin:

This looks a great solution but….
I would like to avoid showing the coupon code option to all users – and have it visible only to users I select (who I know to be on benefits, for example) – otherwise all users will be searching for discount codes for our products !
Is this possible?

If you prefer not to use coupons, you could also look into using a customer specific pricing plugin such as below:
