Okay, here’s my situation. My blog is showing over 600 hits. But according to my wordpress stats, I’ve had less than a hundred. It’s a new blog. It’s apparently counting every hit I make, which would be quite a few (since I’m adding pages and testing links and all). The following are not checked:

    Count visits from wp-admin?
    Count 404 pages as visits?
Count only unique visitors? (resets every 24h)

So… if I come from wp-admin, it shouldn’t show up. But then if I click on a link within the blog, it does? That doesn’t make sense. Plus the stats don’t seem to notice when I come to the blog directly (by typing the address) instead of through wp-admin. But the hit counter does–and counts that as unique hits. Should I check the last option (unique visitors)? But even that wouldn’t be accurate, because it would still show my hits. Any ideas?

Your hit counter sounds like it’s functioning perfectly. When comparing a hit counter to a stats system, it’s important to remember that visitors are not the same as hits. Whenever a person visits your site, that’s 1 visitor. When a page is loaded, that’s 1 hit.

So, if you have an average of 100 visitors a day, and each one goes to 5 pages or posts within your blog, you would have an average of 100 visitors and 500 hits per day.

No offense to the hit counter developers out there, but I usually stay away from hit counters as they can be quite misleading.

Sigh… I wish it would work like the hit counter I had on a long-since-forgotten website I made a few years ago. I didn’t record hits from my computer, and only recorded hits to the main page, I think, so it was much more accurate in terms of how many people viewed my page. Thanks for the info, though. Good to know exactly what it’s recording.

There may be a way to limit your hit counter to just the main page, but I’d need to see your theme to do that. Unfortunately, unless your hit counter has any sort of exclusion cookie, there would be no way to prevent it from counting you.
