I moved my blog to a new host. I was still using 2.8.5 on the old host, and I figured I’d save myself some trouble by installing 2.9.2 on the new host and just importing my custom content and my MySQL databases.

My shortcut sort of worked — the main page of the site and the dashboard look great. However, on the public page the links to comments, categories, etc., don’t work. I presume that’s because I never made the database changes.

I tried to fool WordPress into upgrading the database by running /wp-admin/upgrade.php with db_version 11548 entered in the wp-options database, but that didn’t work. (I got an error message saying I was already up to date.) Can I upgrade the MySQL database structure manually?

Did you try running /wp-admin/upgrade.php without changing the db_version value? That should have worked.

Thanks. Hmm… I thought I did that. My old version was db_version 11548. However, I tried that again and got a message that the database was upgraded. Thanks for telling me that was the right thing to try!

So far, so good. I can see that the database structure in MySQL has changed.

Unfortunately the public-side links to categories and comments still don’t work. I have to think the problem is in the database somewhere — that something isn’t pointing to the proper destination. I guess maybe it’s time to reimport the old database, then try the “upgrade” step again.

Aha! Fooled around some more, and discovered that my old theme was incompatible with 2.9.2.

I activated a newer theme, and everything seems to be working properly.

Also might update your permalinks by visiting Administration > Settings > Permalinks and clicking on Save Changes.
