I am the developer for 10+ clients who run WordPress-based sites, each with a separate blog section, all hosted on Network Solutions. Long story short, many of our sites fell prey to the recent wave of hacks into WordPress. Network Solutions restored each of our sites from backup copies last week to combat the issue, and the hacking has stopped.

However, ever since the restoration the image-uploader has been broken on each of these sites. They aren’t even all hosted under the same account, but each affected site was a victim of the malicious hacking that was going on two weeks ago. When one of my clients goes to upload an image, it writes to the correct folder but the image shows just the blank “X” on both the preview screen and the blog entry itself.

I’ve heard that this may be an issue with permissions, but I’ve tried changing those to “776” and nothing helps.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue lately?

  • I had the same problem. One way to fix it is to login into NS and reset permissions from within your Hosting Control Panel (nsHosting > FTP & Content Publishing > Reset File Permissions) .

Unfortunately, since the site fix (from the recent wp/ns hack in April) I have had to do a reset of the permissions twice now in order to get images uploaded.
