• I’ve been working on my WordPress blog recently, and there seems to be an issue happening now.
When I view certain blog posts on mobile, the images are being displayed EXTRA EXTRA large so that they are wayyy bigger than the size of mobile screen.
When I went in to see what was going on, it looks like a bunch of blog posts have image blocks that have become in error and are saying “Attempt to recover block”…

I tried to recover the blocks by clicking the “Attempt to recover” button, and when I would do that, it would just recover it, but it would remove the caption that I had underneath the image… if I tried to add the caption underneath, it wouldn’t be formatted like all the other images in my other blog posts that have the image being outlined in a square box with the caption text sitting underneath it in smaller size font & italicized.

However, if I clicked on the 3 dots instead of on “Attempt to recover”, and I selected to “convert to classic block”, then it would successfully recover the image, along with the caption text and the caption text would be formatted properly. So it seems like I need the images to be in the Classic Editor for the proper caption formatting.
However, when I published the changes and checked what it would look like on mobile, it still has the same issue… the issue where the images are appearing overly large and not fitting within the mobile screen size ??

The following is the list of blogposts in which I am having these image issues on mobile:
    https://unveilwithariel.com/crewing-or-hitchhiking-on-a-boat-around-the-world/
    https://unveilwithariel.com/workaway-experience-in-a-sailing-community-in-guatemala/
    https://unveilwithariel.com/you-ask-i-answer-how-i-prepared-for-my-long-term-trip-to-asia/
    https://unveilwithariel.com/how-to-find-a-sailboat-to-crew-for-or-hitchhike-on/

Here’s the example where I completed the above procedure, and there’s no longer “Attempt to recover” anywhere where I go to edit the blogpost, but the image size on mobile remains messed up.
    https://unveilwithariel.com/how-to-find-a-sailboat-to-crew-for-or-hitchhike-on/

I checked the rest of my blog posts and they appear to be fine.
All the blog posts that are fine seem to be in the “Classic Editor”.
So, I also tried to put the blog post I worked on (https://unveilwithariel.com/how-to-find-a-sailboat-to-crew-for-or-hitchhike-on/
) into the classic editor & publish it… but that didn’t make any change to the way it was viewed on mobile.

Can you kindly let me know how I can resolve this issue as soon as you can?

  • Hi @eaboutboul

You have an awesome site! The HTML for your image blocks isn’t what WordPress would normally produce, which is why the blocks have that error. I wonder if you possibly have plugins that have enhanced the image block and caused this. Alternatively, maybe you have initially added the images by using only HTML. It is possible to achieve the same style of images using the image block, but you would need to add some custom styles.

    Hi @west7 ,
Thank you for your helpful reply!

I did not initially add the images by using HTML only, and from my knowledge I haven’t downloaded any plug-ins or anything.

But what would be the reason that if I convert those blocks to Classic editor that it still does not end up working?
What’s the different between these blocks and all the other blocks in my blog that are working fine? Is there a way to fix it without custom styles?

    Thanks!

    Hi @eaboutboul

When you say, “I did not initially add the images by using HTML only”, are you implying you did modify the HTML after adding the images?

You may decide to replace the images either using the image block or the classic block. You will lose your styling when doing that, but it’ll give you the best foundation for the future. I think using custom styles to get things back the way they were is a good option too.

There are some guides to styling blocks:
