• Hi,

I’m looking for better solutions to improve my Google Publisher and Google News setup. Can you advise as to whether GN Publisher:

1). Replaces the need for the WebSub/PubSubHubbub plugin? You note that GN Publisher fixes delayed crawling by Google but not sure if this refers to WebSub functionality.

2). Replaces the need for the plugin ‘Featured Images in RSS for Mailchimp & More’? This is how I’m currently sending images to Google Publisher but each article is showing duplicate images in the Media Assets section of the article view.

3). My site serves images as Webp. I’ve read Google Publisher doesn’t render Webp images. How does GN Publisher deal with Webp images vis-a-vis Google Publisher?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Metaflix,

    1) GN Publisher uses WebSub to alert Google to new content on the specific feed that GN Publisher creates. It doesn’t ping any other hubs or for any additional feeds. If you are only using the WebSub/PubSubHubbub plugin to alert the Publisher Center to new content, you would not need both plugins.

    2) Yes, GN Publisher includes the post’s featured image and includes mark up identifying it as the primary image Google News should use with the article.

    3) The app emulator in the Publisher Center does not render Webp. The emulator doesn’t work well in many regards at the moment though. As far as I know, Webp works fine in Google News and the Google News app. However, in the past publishers generally had a fallback in a different format, and I’m not positive that the image used in the app wasn’t a fallback. If you could experiment with just offering Webp and confirming that it works in the app, I’d appreciate knowing about that,

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for following up. I’ll be replacing various other plugins with GN Publisher as it seems very promising. I’ll also be happy to follow up regarding Webp and the app.

Aside from that, I’m having trouble conceptualizing the functionality of my RSS feed versus the Google News XML sitemap that Yoast generates. Both seem essential to appear on Google News. What does the RSS feed do that the XML sitemap does not, and vice-versa? Which drives the response from Google to potentially feature our articles in Google News, Google Discover, etc.?

If you could let me know as I don’t want to be stomping on my own toes. Thanks so much!
