    Hi there,

I got the error message “You could not delete a plugin while it’s active on the main site” whenever trying to delete a plugin on my site. The problem is that it’s a single site, not multisite. So I can’t find anyway to fix it except deactivating W3 Total Cache plugin.

How could I resolve it permanently.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  • I’ve had this happen before too – Just manually delete the folder, or use another plugin like WP File Manager.

You might also have to delete:
    /wp-content/advanced-cache.php
    /wp-content/db.php
    /wp-content/object-cache.php

Thanks for your suggestion @chadreitsma .

It’s quite inconvenience when I can’t use WordPress built-in function.

Look forward to a fix from W3 Total Cache team.

    Hello @aidenturner

I am sorry about the issue you are experiencing with deleting the plugins and I am happy to assist you with this.
í’ve researched more about this, and while I was not able to replicate the issue, it appears that the issue might occur on some hosting environments and with all caching plugins.
What @chadreitsma suggested about deleting the plugin folder manually is a valid idea, however deleting:

    /wp-content/advanced-cache.php
    /wp-content/db.php
    /wp-content/object-cache.php

is not since those are W3TC drop-ins. These will of course be re-created once visiting the dashboard again.
You can try to purge the cache just before you delete the plugin while in the Installed Plugins section.
Since the problem is in the wp-admin area, you should make sure that the Page Caching, Minify, and Object Cache (if enabled) are disabled for logged-in users.
Let me know if this helps!
    Thanks!
