Migrating from sub-domain to primary domain

  • I have a question about migrating WordPress from a subdomain (blog.domainname.com) to the primary domain (www.domainname.com). I want to develop under blog.domainname.com then migrate once tested and final. I need my current website functional until I switch over.

    I have read the thread “Moving WordPress Within Your Site” and before I take on a what appears a gargantuan task, I wanted to confirm that all these steps are required for a sub-domain move.

    I haven’t gone too far down the development road, so a reinstall is possible. On that point, Could wordpress and my current site co-exist while I develop? That is, what file triggers wordpress to start. my hosting co. says it’s alphabetical so index.html would fire off before index.php. No harm, no foul?

    If not, since I have no blog posts or comments, is it required to do all the steps listed in the migration thread above? I figure there are configuration entries in database tables, so I don’t know the answer. I have only created pages, categories, added a few plugins all which apparently reside under my /blog directory, so I could reinstall if it’s the best solution.

    WordPress is installed on the server directory (domainname/blog). Could I merely repoint after development (wordpress URI admin screen). I hope it is merely a matter of moving URI pointers.

    Any help would be appreciated on this sub-domain move.

  • Have you read Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory? You might find this approach a lot easier.

    Now that’s fast. Thanks esmi. I think this will work perfectly. I am backing up my website as we speak and will try this out.

    Since the installation is already in the directory I want (domainname/blog), I need not change the wordpress directory only the blog directory URI’s, then make the rest of the changes.

    WOW, you rock esmi.

    One directory change, two file copies, one edit and renamed index.html and VOILA. I can work on devl and still keep prod by renaming index.html_old to index.html.
