We recently noticed that all our websites on one particular GoDaddy server stopped updating the Rules…all of them at different dates and times. WordFence has been working great on these websites for years, then all of the sudden starting June of 2020, websites started to fail to update the rules. More in July, some more in August, then some more in October 2020.

When I try to manually refresh the rules I get this error:

“No rules were updated. Please verify your website can reach the Wordfence servers.”

I went into Tools >> Diagnostics there are all green check marks saying that there is no connection problem.

I Googled this issue and followed a few suggested fixes from other folks. None of those worked.

Those included deleting the wflog/rules.php file. I also did that…and deactivated the plugin and reactivated it. That did not fix the issue.

The websites are running the latest version of WordPress and WordFence.

And I talked to GoDaddy to confirm noc4.wordfence.com (69.46.36.20) and https://noc4.wordfence.com/v1.8/ is not being blocked on the server side.

    Hi, @lane95678

    Sorry for the issues.

Can you send a diagnostic report from 2 of the sites having the issue to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it so I can take a look for you.

Also, can you confirm after removing the rules.php file if it is being regenerated and if it is, are there contents in the file? You can also try the manual refresh option and then go look at the rules.php file to see if the date has changed on the file. There have been cases where that failure message will show, however, the rules are in fact updating. Just want to confirm that isn’t the case here.

    Thanks,
    Scott
