Adding large PDF files to media library w/o plugin?

I have several very large PDF files I want to upload to the media library and post to my site, but they exceed the maximum file size limits (by a lot).

I can FTP them up and I can manually link them, but ideally I’d like them to appear in the media library for future linking.

Is there a way to do this w/o a plugin?

If not, is there a suggested plugin?
