Can the variation image change on colour filter?

If I set up a filter to filter my variable products by colour, size etc, do the returned products display the variation image, instead of the default featured image?

Example

I have a variable T-shirt product with three colour variations:

1. Red
2. Green
3. Blue

I filter products on my T-shirt archive page by green, the returned products should have the green variation image.
