Whenever users try to comment on my blog articles, they hit submit then a spam filter is triggered somewhere and they receive a blank white screen that only says “Blocked as suspected bot.”

A few people reported this issue to me, and I tested it myself in incognito and replicated it in Google Chrome. It appears that deactivating the Wordfence Security plugin resolves this issue. However, the point of a security plugin is for it to be enabled. Are the WordFence developers aware of this issue?

I’ve also heard this is an issue with some other apps as well, specifically, MOJO Marketplace. However, I use MOJO Marketplace and I don’t receive the issue with it enabled. I only have the issue with WordFence Security.

I am wondering if this is happening to everyone whose tried to comment on my blog since it was created in November 2020. That could be one reason why I have no comments. It’s a bit disheartening, and makes me worry that Google is de-ranking my website because it observes high amounts of spam being triggered there.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Hi @mccloud7

Wordfence does not and cannot generate a message that says, “Blocked as suspected bot”.

Therefore your test of deactivating Wordfence and the problem being resolved would be a coincidence of timing.

Do you use other security plugins?

    Hi Phil,

Thank you very much for your reply. I understand that Wordfence isn’t directly generating the response “Blocked as suspected bot.”. However, that doesn’t mean settings/backend coding in Wordfence are not conflicting with other apps and causing WordPress to generate the error.

What I know for sure, is that today I’ve tested 5 computers in Chrome incognito and replicated the issue on all of them on 1st attempt. I then deactivated Wordfence after each attempt and confirmed that doing so resolves the error, and the comments are published. I also attempted to replicate the error more than once per instance before deactivating Wordfence, just to add additional variables and to remove the first attempt being a fluke.

Deactivating Wordfence is what resolves my error “Blocked as suspected bot.”

I don’t use any other security plugins. However, I do use Really Simple SSL.

    Thanks Phil,

Your link provides examples of users who deactivated Bluehost to fix this issue. I do not use Bluehost.

My permanent solution to fix “Blocked as suspected bot” is to deactivate Wordfence Security. Something within Wordfence is causing my WordPress to output this error message when users try to comment on my blog articles.

    Hi @mccloud7

Does deactivating the Mojo Marketplace plugin resolve the problem?

    (@mccloud7)

Hi Phil, I did not attempt to deactivate Mojo Marketplace because I use features within the app that I did not want to lose. Deactivating Wordfence Security is what solved the issue, as I had less to lose by deactivating it because it does not affect the front-end of my website. I replaced Wordfence Security with iThemes Security and my issue does not occur, even while Mojo Marketplace is activated.

    Hi mccloud7

    Thank you for the update.

As the blocking error message appears to be related to the Mojo Marketplace plugin then it appears that it was creating a conflict with Wordfence.
