split based on product type

1- can i split the order by product type by default ? (physical and virtual)

You can use Inclusive method for your scenario. Select one of these type items as inclusive and it will split the items accordingly.

2- can the splitting automatically occur after payment ?

If you have turned on Auto Split, order will be splitted as placed even if payment is not done yet. If you want to split manually, you can turn off Auto Split and you will get a button in order list to split manually.

@a7medo778 let me add a couple of things in 2nd point. There is an option to choose the correct order status for split. In case you don’t want to split orders until they are in processing mode, select the processing status. So orders will not split until they are in pending or on-hold status. You can choose multiple triggers as well.

And there are a number of split methods which can work for you, there is no problem with the virtual or physical goods.
