Can you integrate WordPress with another Database?

I am not even sure if this is at all possible… but, I have my main database (a static php website) with registered users (they can log in to post to my site, vote, etc.). I also have a WordPress blog on the same site but with a separate database… is there any way I could allow my registered users from my main site to log in to my blog to post comments on my blog posts as well?
