Pasting into Evernote or Gmail retains formatting. Why not WordPress?

  • I can copy and paste from almost any website into Evernote or Gmail and the formatting either stays exactly the same or almost all the same. Why is most formatting lost when pasting into WordPress (Gutenberg editor)? How does Evernote and Gmail retain/use the source CSS?

    If I wanted to make it possible for pasting to preserve formatting, any idea how?

  • Hi, @imagiscapeca! Can you provide an example link to the page which looses formatting when pasted into the Gutenberg editor?
    When I try pasting, all the semantic elements (headings, strong tags, img tags etc) are pasted, but the styles applied to them are the destination styles, i.e. the styles from my WordPress page.

    I am most aware of it when posting articles with comments.

    Here’s a demo of the issue on my website (it requires the password “test”): https://letlaughrule.com/uncategorized/test-paste.
    On that page I try a few ways to paste the following (randomly-selected) public post and its comments: facebook.com/youcanreachdavid/posts/3455195277920324.

    Since pasting into Evernote and Gmail results in a near-exact copy, I wonder if a blank style sheet would mean it retains all the formatting. The formatting must be copied with the copy action, since it is copied into Evernote and Gmail.

    Does that make sense to you?

    I thought there was a way to select a different style for some posts, but I can’t find how to do that now. Do you happen to know?

    Thank you for creating the test page, Jonathon!
    The page I see really looks messy, with too many extra new lines. It seems that the problem is due to some of your settings/plugins/the theme, though, because when I paste the same post into a fresh install of the default theme, the result is similar to what I can see in gmail:
