On my Web Story Checklist it is recommending that I add captions to each of my video snippets. I’ve read the post about the required WebVTT (.vtt) captions format and honestly it seems very complicated to create captions this way. I’ve instead added captions to each video snippet prior to uploading them into my Web Story using a simple app that automatically adds them to the video. I would love to see something like that added to the Web Story plugin versus the suggested method of creating WebVTT files.

@shanemery Thanks for sharing your feedback!

The Web Story is built with HTML code (using the AMP framework). HTML is what search engines use to read the content of your pages and determine how they will appear in search.

Assets that have ‘burned-in’ text (the text is part of the actual image or video) would not appear in the HTML. It is also not the best for accessibility and makes it hard for search engines to understand your content.

We recommend using assets that are clean, and layer text elements on top using the element, which a WebVTT file adds text overlays to a <video>. You can learn more about WebVTT here or reference this tutorial for help.

@shanemery I want to add that we are considering ways to edit and style video captions in the future as noted in our public roadmap. Please stay tuned for this enhancement, and open a new support topic should you have any other questions. Thanks!
