Updating Theme inquiry

    I have a wordpress that has been altered by a designer that i would like to revert to
    its original theme, (minimalism) so that it will match my new site im putting up in a week or two.
    Can I just update the theme to the new version to delete all my custom settings?
    I just want to start from scratch again as to keep it simple and match the aesthetic of the new site.
    Will this work?

    just down load the theme – minimalist or whatever – to your desktop, then delete it from the sever
    install the new theme and see if that’s what you want
