list sub-categories instead of post list when clicking categories

Hello,

I have a basic design with post area on left and a category list (no children) in the sidebar.

I would like to make it so that when one click a category, the list of all subcategories is displayed in the post area. Currently when you click a category it displays a list of all posts in that category.
