    Hey WooCommerce team,

we just noticed the following with at least the current WooCommerce version, probably older versions, too:

We set up a coupon and restrict its use to specific email addresses. If a customer with another email address or even a guest without an account enters this coupon code on checkout this should not work.

And indeed, no discount is applied for these users upon usage of a coupon code not allowed for their email address. But nevertheless they get the message that the coupon code had been successfully applied. And this should not be in our eyes.

If a user enters a coupon code not allowed for him there should be a message as if this code would not exists. As stated above, currently it is not completely bad since no discount is applied although the message seems to be positive. But we think, the message itself, too, should reflect that the code was invalid.

In the end a not allowed user even should not get the information that this code exists in all. So the best message for these cases would be the same as if a non existent coupon code would have been entered. What do you think?

    Greetings,
    -doffine

  • Hello @doffine ,

    Okay, I get your point.

According to the current implementation, the email restrictions on the coupon are checked when the order is placed. So, when the billing address does not match the user gets a notice that he can not use this coupon. The logic behind this is that, you can change the billing address up until the checkout page hence the restriction does not apply during the coupon adding time.

I found an on-going discussion on this, you can also join and share your expectation.

    Thank you ??
