We want to use YouTube videos in the sidebar of a site and set them to Autoplay. But we want to do that with the sound automatically off, with the user able to turn it on from the button. Is there a way of doing this?

No. You can’t control the YouTube player’s volume via an embed URL parameter. It’s a limitation of the player.

That’s a shame. Autoplay with sound on is too intrusive for readers, but the added dynamism of autoplaying a video in the sidebar with the sound defaulting to off would be great.

    Oh, well.

I should clarify: it is possible, but it requires more work than just changing a value in the embed URL. You have to use Javascript to do it: https://code.google.com/apis/youtube/js_api_reference.html

That’s something that I’m not interested in supporting, but you could likely use it.

Many thanks. We’ll have to see if we can do this.
